About Us

The origins of the business go back to 1958, when two young men John Morris and Ron Bevan met at Treforest Technical College near Pontypridd South Wales. Both were studying Higher National Mechanical Engineering and literally became firm friends from the day they first met. They had similar motorbikes and soon found themselves socialising at all the local hotspots together!

 

In 1969 Ron and John pooled what money they had to start a small pneumatics engineering business together. They named it CEE GEE Engineering. Both had full-time jobs at the time and so the special purpose machines they were designing and building for customers had to be worked on in the evenings and weekends. They had been loaned a small area in a local garage but soon found themselves needing extra room.

 

In 1972 the two friends took a huge risk and bought a small premises of their own in Trehafod – a village and community in the Rhondda Valley. By 1973 the business was so busy that Ron and John had to make the even bigger step of leaving their secure full-time employment in order to concentrate fully on their growing business. They also decided to change the name of the company and so Control Gear was established in July 1973.

 

Thanks to a great deal of hard work and dedication the business continued to flourish, and very quickly new personnel needed to be brought on board. Control Gear began to design and build pneumatically operated machinery for a wide range of applications and customers. In addition, the company expanded the sales and distribution side of the business, and Control Gear soon became stockists and distributors for many leading pneumatic manufacturers and brands.

 

Thanks to tremendous vision however, the two founders realised that greater success and longevity would only be achieved if Control Gear encompassed all aspects of fluid power engineering and other closely related market sectors. Over the last 50 years therefore, the owners and management have continually invested in the business and our people. So much so our capability and service proposition now cover nine key market sectors – Compressors, Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Filtration, Process, Industrial Tools & Automation, Dust & Fume Extraction, Hose & Fittings and Spray & Product Finishing.
